my husband is in the coast guard and is going to be promoted to chief sometime after the beginning of the year. I'm very excited about this and I wanted to get him something special but am not entirely sure what. I was considering a really nice pocket watch that I can get with his name and rank engraved. I also have considered a really nice bottle of scotch since he enjoys that kind of thing. What do you think? any other ideas.

If you check some of the web sites for the Army-Air Force, Navy and Coast Guard Exchanges you might even be able to find one there that you can buy with the Coast Guard emblem on it. Military dot com has a gift store link as well. You can then have a local jeweler do the personalized engraving.
Wish him the best from me and pass on my congratulations for his "getting the hat". Don't forget to pin on his chief's insignia on the big day.
