Good gift ideas for Mom & Dad?

Sproc

'Tis the time for trying to think up gift ideas. I'm trying to think of what to get my mom and dad, and I'm really stumped.

My dad is the stereotypical guy, likes the outdoors, sports (baseball and football especially), tools, etc. Because of this, he already has plenty of screwdrivers, hammers, etc, etc, etc, and I'd like to get him something he'd use, but something he doesn't have already.

My mom always gives the corny answers of happiness, love, family, etc., but she never gives me any good ideas of what I can actually buy her. She's an elementary school teacher, likes to read (though she hasn't had a ton of time to read lately), and likes to cook. Both my parents like to cook actually (my dad's a big griller).

So any ideas? I'd like to keep up below $50. Many thanks, and happy holidays.

Answer
I made a list for christmas gifts here: http://www.squidoo.com/gifts-for-dad-and-granddad I personally think a gift that might be suited for all is a subscription to netflix or hulu plus. Or maybe gelled ice cubes? I love those. Anyways good luck and I'm sure you will find something!

Need help with christmas list?

Alannah H

I'm making my christmas list but I'm not sure what to put on there. I'm 13, I already have an iPhone 4S and I'm getting my upgrade next year, so not a phone. And it can't be a pet because I already have two puppies, I'm very girly, and my favorite color is pink. There is no price limit so suggest anything!

Answer
christmas is about being with family not what you can get. But that doesn't mean people don't like the gifts and of course we don't want a pair of socks lol. I would suggest things you really like, not what can I get, but what you really would like for the year. Do some soul searching.

I can give you some ideas on how to go about it. such as....

maybe something new for your room, a new lamp, or blankets, maybe a statue of something you're really into. Give you something new and fresh for the new year. IF you like to read, some kids do think of what books you like to read for the year.

maybe you like to add some new cool jewelry for the year or a new kind of outfit or wardrobe for 2013. if you're allowed to wear makeup add that to your list. I do and I never have to get makeup or nail polish throughout the year. saves me loads of money, that now can be used for something else.

there is always gift cards as well, it's great to have money for something you see later in the year that you really want but don't have the money for.

New jacket, gloves, hat, scarf. always makes me feel great after christmas to show off my new winter stuff.

Do you need a new bike, skates,

how about cd's new stuff has came out this year. A lot of new bands old bands making new cd's.
do you like to draw, maybe some art stuff, or an easel.

Think about what could I use this year, what do I like to add or have for this year. It can be anything from your room to your hair, clothes, to your hobbies, outdoor activities, to something you really want.

birthday gifts ideas..?

BLAH

i have a problem right now... i have 2 birthdays in aug which i need to get gifts for. one girl is a close friend and i dont know what to get her for her 17th birthday. the second is this girl i want to be with who is also turning 17. i want to give her something that will make her truly understand how much i care about her. i have done those cheesy ideas in the past and i want some new ideas. also it has to be in my price range which is 40-60. since im asking strangers for help, you can see how desperate i am at this point. thank you in advance.

Answer
First, If you want to show someone you care about them; you have to get them something you hold dear to yourself. If you truly cherish what you give her, she will see it in your eyes. I can't elaborate on what you hold dear to youself, but if it truly means something to you, the price most likely won't be a factor. As for your other freind, jewlery (if thats how you spell that :{ ) is a good gift. Maybe a necklace with her name on it. Or possibly a wrist braclet. I hope that helps.

I am throwing a birthday party for my 9 year old daughter. Is it ok to ask everyone not to bring gifts?

Cas

I know that some kids might not have much money. Is it okay to ask them not to bring gifts? Should I not say anything and let them bring gifts if they want. We are very accepting of other people's generosity but do not want to make kids feel obligated.

Answer
Another way to go is to ask kids each to bring a gently used book to trade. Ask them to wrap it and let the kids each choose one to take home.. This lets all the kids get something, and nobody has to spend a lot of money. Also, you 9-yr-old gets more than enough gifts from you and grandparents right, so why get a bunch more gifts........These people who are worried about your child getting gifts obviously don't have children, or are children, or they have a maid that cleans the mess of toys up in the kids room everyday. :)

what is a recommended birthday gift for a 9 year old girl?

chikw

Answer
It depends on the price range. You can get some Barbie clothes, five outfits for about ten dollars. You could get a Barbie for about twenty dollars for a nice one. A diary with a lock is a great gift for a 9 year old. A little privacy is perfect for her. You could get something for a Nintendo DS or a membership with Gamefly, it allows you to rent games on the DS or any system and only costs about 20 a month. Clothing is popular at that age as are shoes or boots (my daughter loves black boots). Any Barbie Accessories, books for that age level if they are into books, Art items, paints and such are VERY well liked by that age. I got my son a kit from Target with paints, easel and everything for twenty dollars. I am sure i could come up with more but I would need to think about it.

Have you seen any department stores running a Lancome free gift with purchase?

craftswami

My friends birthday is this weekend. I wanted to buy her some Lancome...but we all know that the best time to buy is when they are offering a gift with purchase. I've googled, but am only coming up with dead-end leads.

Or...does anyone know their free gift schedule? I could get her a gift card and then give her a heads up on when the promo will be.

Thanks you guys!

Answer
you could try debenhams, john lewis & boots they normally have offers like that on hope this helps x

Any ideas of where I should get my wedding gift list from?

Q. I'm thinking Argos at the moment.

Debenhams or John Lewis don't appeal to me...
I'm from England, UK

Answer
It would be most helpful if you put your location. Many stores are not international, I'm in the US and have not heard of the stores you are referring to.

Ok, well this may not be specific to those stores but I hope it's helpful:

You should choose the stores that:
A. have things that you and your fiance love, from kitchen electrics to china to sheets and towels
and
B. have a nice range of prices so that people who want to buy from your list/registry can all get you something within their own budget.

Congratulations!

how do I send a gift to the UK?

Kevin

ok i want to send something to a friend of mine that moved to the UK? how do i do that??

Answer
You make sure that the gift is something that is allowed into the UK. You package the gift so that it is secure during transportation. You address it with your return address as well ,and then you take it to the post office where they will weight it. You decide if you want it to go airmail or surface mail. You then fill in the customs form, pay the required amount and leave it with the post office to deal with it from then on...

Would my child be consider a gifted child? UK?

Me

Okay I asked a question earlier, and I guess I didn't give the right information.

We have a son, who just turned 2 a week ago.
For about 3-4 months now he has learned...
all his colors
his numbers
most of his ABC's
can read about 3 dozen words (and learning more each week)
can do simple math
knows his shapes

On a non educational level..
he knows how to dial the telephone and use it (house and cell phone)
play (with more skill than my teenagers lol) the Wii an play station (including how to put the disk in, turn it on an load the game, switch between users etc)
basic computer skills, such as opening a web browser an clicking on his saved pages and turning the pc on an off.
use a TV remote, to scroll through his programs saved on the DVR an select which one he wants to watch

This is not by any means an all inclusive list of his abilities. I am just curious if he would be considered gifted in England? I know in the states he is.

We are just concerned with his ability to learn at a frightening pace and memory retention ability (which is somewhat unreal) , that he is going to be bored in school. We already have to find numerous different ways to keep him stimulated and learning. He learns VERY quickly an gets bored.
For instance in one bus ride of less than 15 minutes, he learned all his shapes. Now if you try to sit with him to go over them, he will tell you what they are once, then refuses to do so again and we have to move on to something new. As soon as he has mastered something we have to find a new way to challenge him.

Is home schooling allowed in England? I am just trying to figure our options out. Or if he is just "normal" for English children, then I guess we don't need to be thinking ahead.

Answer
He certainly sounds like a bright little boy. Do you have more than one child? I'll swear I answered a question from you the other day but I thought it was about a child who was much closer to school age.

He won't be bored in school at least to start with because what he'll be learning is how to interact with a group, how to cope when he has to share the adult in charge with 15 or so other kids, how to take turns or play on a team in PE, and so on. Reception is pretty much about life skills rather than reading and writing. They do do that as well, but they'll be at a wide range of different levels. It's later on, when the whole class is learning the idea of "subtraction" and yours understood it at 3, that he'll be bored.

We don't really make a big fuss of "gifted" here. (Which I'm not at all saying is a good thing). If you are expecting professional educators to gush over how amazing your son is, it isn't going to happen.

However, bright young kids _do_ have an astonishing memory retention ability compared to adults. Don't be writing to the Guinness Book of Records yet :) He's very likely to have a more "normal" memory as he gets older and simply _has_ to remember a wide range of things about different subjects. Right now, all he has to remember is a few fun facts. You'd find it easy too...except that your memory is all filled up with when you have to make dinner and if the car needs petrol and hanging the washing out and filling in that form...

My opinion? Regardless of how academically gifted he is, you need to let him be "normal". He needs to go to playgroup and fingerpaint. He needs to dig in the sand. He needs to sing tunelessly and dress up as a pirate. He needs to be an ordinary toddler. He needs to play with friends (or at least acquaintances). Even if he'd rather be doing maths worksheets. (And I say that as mum to a child who would absolutely have rather spent his life doing maths worksheets and whose idea of a perfect early childhood day would have contained zero interaction with other kids).

Cross the bridge of whether he's bored at school when he actually gets there. We don't have the concept of passing or failing a year - if he goes to primary school for a term and it isn't right, you can pull him out, ring up your local academic private school and see if they'll look at him, start homeschooling, whatever. But please don't wrap him in cotton wool as this special little snowflake who can't possibly enjoy the things other kids do. You won't be doing him any favours at all.

are there any etiquettes in corporate gifting?

sandra dc

Answer
Yes, there are many, many rules of etiquette which apply to gifting in business situations. Hundreds of books have been written to explain such rules, which depend on many factors.

Many countires and corporations have very strict policies regarding their employees' giving and/or accepting gifts. To avoid creating a problem, it’s imperative to know and comply with applicable laws and policies.

(1) Country: in many countries, gifts upon the initial meeting are expected, and in other countries such gifts would be considered offensive and even a criminal act (a bribe).

Companies in countries like Paraguay frown upon most such gifts, since that could be construed as bribes. In Malaysia, such gifts are inappropriate among business colleagues, until they have established a friedly relationship. In Singapore, government employees are not allowed to accept any gifts. In the U.S., the value of such gifts (to be tax deductable) is limited to $25.

On the other hand, in countries like Japan, Indonesia and the Philippines, exchanging such gifts is strongly rooted in tradition.

(2) Occasion: in many situations and in many countries and/or cultures, gifts are expected on certain occasions, such as weddings, births and even deaths!

(3) Religious Rules: In all cases, one must be cognizant of religious laws and customs when selecting gifts.

For example, a gift made of pigskin is inappropriate for a Jewish and Muslim recipient, and a gift of cowhide is inappropriate for an Indian recipient. A bottle of wine (alcohol) would be inappropriate for a Muslim or Mormon.

(4) Sexual Mores. In virtually all countries and occasions, one must be cognizant of sexual mores and innuendo. For example, one would never give intimate apparel to a colleague.

(5) Corporate Identity. A gift with a prominent company logo is almost never appropriate, and even one with a discreet logo is never appropriate in Greece, Spain and Portugal.

(6) Presentation. Even if a gift is appropriate, there are often very detailed rules of etiqueet on how the gift is presented. For example, it is very important in Asia and the Middle East to only use your right hand, or both hands, to offer or accept a gift, while, in Japan and Hong Kong, one always uses both hands.

In Singapore, a recipient will “graciously refuse three times” before accepting your gift. Other rules apply in different places and circumstances that relate to whether the gift should be wrapped, whether the gift should be opened immediately, and how the recipient should react upon receipt of the gift.

There are even rules applicable to how one offers one's hand for a hand-shake and how one exchanges business cards.

Many of these business gift rules of etiquette have analogies in social settings, but, as noted above, many do not.

We've provided a few links below for detailed information, and there are many additional sites available by Googling.

Please re-post with more specific details, and we shall provide further information.

Hope this helps.
