My two younger sisters and I are throwing my mom a surprise 50th bday party in a couple of mnths. Its not going to be anything formal. We are renting a pavillion (shelter) at a local park and going to be throwing a type of bbq. She loves that type of thing so it works perfect. My mom is one of those amazing moms that NEVER ask for anything for herself but me and my sisters would like people to bring gifts (including gag gifts...shes got a great sense humor) . We are making the invitation ourselves and I was wondering how we should word it. I plan on putting it all the way at the bottom of the invitation. Maybe if someone had some type of quick poem. Im not very good at stuff like that. Thanks in advance :)

Your mother surely deserves every good thing life has to offer, and she no doubt will be thrilled with the surprise party you and your sisters are giving her. Unfortunately, however, there really is no decent or polite way to request gifts in a birthday party invitation, not even when it's in honour of someone like your mum, who never asks for anything for herself.
Rest assured, however, that generally, when people are invited to a "Birthday" party, they automatically assume they are to bring a present of some sort. At your mother's age, people often DO give silly "gag" gifts, but you can also expect she will receive things like manicure gift cards and other "pampering" gifts.
You can also expect invitees to call one of you to ask what your mother might like for a present. They might ask what her favourite colour is, or if there is a certain perfume she particularly fancies. In such cases, answer them honestly, emphasizing how very thoughtful they are to even THINK to give her a gift.
Yes, I know, that last sentence probably made you wonder if I'd read your question right. The thing is, when one is hoping or fishing for gifts, one isn't supposed to be obvious about it. To avoid offending invitees by looking too eager for gifts, focus instead on their 'thoughtfulness' in even considering a gift, which in turn will ironically make them all the more sure to bring one.
Meanwhile, do keep in mind that regardless of any gifts brought by guests, this surprise party will be something your mother never forgets. It is the thoughtfulness of YOU kids that may well be the greatest gift of all on her 50th...and beyond.
