District 9 for boyfriend's birthday gift?

I was thinking about getting the movie 'District 9' for my boyfriend for his birthday (obviously not just that). but im not sure is its that good, as i haven't seen it. he likes the sort of action/thriller films. his favorites are inception, transformers and godfather.
if you've seen 'District 9' do you think its good? or have you a better suggestion?
