How much money can I receive as a gift without tax?

Q. How much money can I receive as a gift, without being charge any sort of income tax.

Baring in mind, that the money is being given from NZ, to the UK, and the receiver is still in full time education?

Thanks.

Answer
A gift is not income, so it cannot be charged to income tax.

There is no UK "Gift Tax" for transfers between people: either on the receiver or the donor.

There may be something in NZ, but I don't know their rules.

I guess to NZ rugb league fans?

I bought a Wellington Hurricans rugby League shirt signed by all the players, well actually my ex boyfriend bought it for me (off his ex) thinking I liked rugby, I know strange gift but thats why we broke up, about how much can I sell if for I'd like to donate the money to a charity here.

Answer
You may get around NZD$100-$500.

Try selling it on www.trademe.co.nz (The NZ version of eBay)

I'm sure there are some Rugby fans out there who would be interested.
It might help to try and decipher some of the signatures.... Jonah Lomu, Tana Umaga, Christian Cullen, Piri Weepu....would all be valuable signatures.

Good luck :)
